Statins Only As Needed

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The statin drugs are cholesterol lowering drugs that are prescribed to millions of Americans. They are known for doing a great job lowering cholesterol and elevation of cholesterol is a serious risk factor for heart disease. But should otherwise healthy people take statins? In other words if they are so helpful why not just give them to everyone?

Researchers took a look at the concept and after reviewing fourteen studies that deal with the issue they found that, although helpful for those at risk, there is no need to - as it is commonly joked - "put statins in the water supply".

What you can take away from the study is the fact that the statins are extremely beneficial but should be used in the correct people.
