PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The makers of Spanx, the undergarment that celebrities swear by to reduce the look of their waistlines on the red carpet, came out with a line for pregnant women.

Is this such a good idea? One local Ob/gyn doctor weighs in.

Penn Medicine ob/gyn doctor DaCarla Albright says the Spanx might not necessarily be a bad thing:  “You have a product that may give you some lower back support. You are buying your pre-pregnancy size so it will grow with you,” she said.

Albright says the product won’t compromise circulation because of the way they are made.  She says in fact they do already use something similar for pregnant women who have varicose veins.

“We do use these stockings that do have quite a bit of compression added to them to help increase circulation in that area.”

Albright says she has no concerns about the compression Spanx would potentially provide in the abdomen region.

Bottom line, it won’t compromise the pregnancy in her opinion. The additional support would be welcomed by her patients.
