Pennsylvania, New Jersey And Delaware Receive 'D' Grades In Foodborne Illness Report

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Center for Science in the Public Interest just released the results of a 10 year study they conducted on how effective states are in reporting foodborne illness. Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware all received "D" grades.

Attorney with the Food Safety Program for the Center, Sarah Klein analyzes the results:

"Some states are doing very well, the result being that their consumers may be more protected from foodborne illness and larger outbreaks. And some states are just not doing very well at all. There was nothing in the data to suggest that a low number of reported outbreaks correlated with a low number of foodborne illness outbreaks. That leads us to believe that just as many people are getting sick in these low reporting states, but they are just not getting counted."

Officials at the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services say they work hard every day with more then 100 local health departments to investigate the causes of foodborne illness and protect the health of citizens.
