(CBS) – ‘Out with the old and in with the new’ pretty much described the box office picture as the two new mainstream titles claimed the top two weekend spots.
The Green Hornet, the comedic superhero thriller starring and written by Seth Rogen, finished first and scared up an estimated $34 million worth of green.
Second was the weekend’s other new attraction, director Ron Howard’s comedy The Dilemma, with Vince Vaughn and Kevin James. It took in $17 million in its debut.
Rounding out the top five were three holdovers with Oscar aspirations and modest returns: True Grit with $11 million, The King’s Speech with $9 million, and Black Swan with $8 million.
Overall, it was a modest commercial weekend with industry totals well below those of the counterpart weekend last year.
