Philly Councilwoman Won't Seek Re-election

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A longtime Philadelphia city councilwoman announced Friday she will not seek re-election, opening up what could be a free-for-all in one of Philadelphia's most diverse districts.

Donna Reed Miller (above) has decided not to run again after four terms representing the 8th Councilmanic District, which runs from Chestnut Hill to Logan. She made it official Friday morning on radio station WURD-AM:

"I will still be the 59th Ward leader, I will still be involved politically.  But for me, its just time to move on, time to do something different."

The battle to succeed Miller in the 8th District could be fierce, particularly in the May primary.  At least five Democrats are either running or considering a run.  The deadline to file nominating petitions to run for the seat is March 8th.

Meantime, 6th District Councilwoman Joan Krajewski has already announced she won't run again.  Council president Anna Verna and GOP at-large Councilman Jack Kelly are undecided about another term, and the rest of the current incumbents say they'll run again.

Reported by KYW City Hall Bureau Chief Mike Dunn.
