PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A leading voice in the pro-vaccine movement is out with a new book about how his fight is yours also.

Deadly Choices: How the Anti-Vaccine Movement Threatens Us All is the latest salvo from Dr. Paul Offit, Children’s Hospital researcher and vaccine creator, countering charges that vaccines hurt more than they help.

Although broadly dismissed scientifically, anti-vaccine concerns create uncertainty in parents who may be less afraid of the disease than what prevents it.

But there’s also another sort, he says, “You’re starting to see parents who are upset that decisions that are being made by other parents — either for themselves or their children – are affecting them.  There are parents that are now testifying in front of Congress that they’re having trouble finding a day care center where there aren’t a significant number of children who aren’t vaccinated.”

The book lays out a history of vaccines and refutes their critics.

Dr. Offit says this is more than an academic discussion. “We’ve had a measles epidemic in 2008.  It was bigger than anything we’d seen in more than a decade.  We have a whooping cough outbreak in California now that’s bigger than anything we’ve seen in 55 years.  It involves 55,000 people and killed 10 children.  We’ve had outbreaks of bacterial meningitis and we’ve had a mumps epidemic.”

If your child is vaccinated why does it matter if others are or are not?

The greatest risk is posed because of the exposure to a live virus. A vaccine, as I am sure you know, is not live. Also, if the imuno-compormised child is nearing their booster shot, their titer is low for immunity. This places them a greater risk for a breakthrough. In other words, contracting the disease. This is why they are considering booster shots for adults. Also, this is why recently vaccinated children are to stay away from anyone with an immunity issue.

There are numerous reproducible scientific studies that show you are BETTER OFF living amongst a group of vaccinated kids, even if you are yourself unvaccinated, than you are being the only one on your block to have the vaccine.

That’s why “herd immunity” is so powerful.

  • Concerned Parent

I have a child with severe asthma. Imagine my concern when there was a whooping cough outbreak at his school. Children like mine are the new collateral damage.

I know a mom who refused to get her children vaccinated because she said a vaccine gave her brother autism.

So her NON vaccinated child was diagnosed with autism!!!! Has to have something to do with genetics.

i am a mom of a child w/ autism & it bothers me that parents think there’s a connection when time after time it’s been proven that there is NONE! it is irresponsible to not vaccinate your child…..it not only endangers their well-being but that of everyone they come in contact with!
