Analysis: GOP Faces Dilemma As They Take Over The House

(CBS) - The new Congress will be sworn in this week and there won't be much breathing room before the national debate begins. There may also be some high risks for the party who won the election.

When the three new Republican members of Congress from our area are sworn in later this week they, along with their counterparts, face a dilemma. On the Sunday talk shows and almost everywhere, Republicans are promising hearings and super oversight on everything Obama.

These hearings could go well into 2012 and the Presidential year. They are hearings on everything from climate change, health care and possible stimulus corruption. These hearings could be valuable but if independent voters, who call the shots these days, see them as a wrecking ball and if the GOP leadership doesn't find compromises on legislation with the White House, then voters could turn their outrage against the party they just empowered.

The conduct of Senate Democrats, who could nullify everything GOP, will also be under scrutiny.
