2 Officers Involved In West Philadelphia Shootout On New Year's Eve

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A shootout between police and an armed suspect leaves the suspect dead and an officer counting his blessings.

Officers Adam O'Donnell and Ivan Centeno were patrolling the 18th district when police say at 7:45 p.m. Friday a green mini-van ran through a red light at 57th and Spruce.

The officers tried to pull the driver over; he refused until they got to Walnut and Frazier.

That's where the suspect shot Officer O'Donnell as he approached his car says Commissioner Charles Ramsey:

"He struck O'Donnell in the stomach area, fortunately he was wearing his bullet proof vest and the vest caught the round. Both officers retreated, returning fire."

The suspect is dead and the officers were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
