MULLICA HILL, NJ (CBS) - Officials broke ground yesterday on the 322 bypass in Gloucester County, a project that should make things a whole lot easier on residents of Mullica Hill, along with people who regularly drive through the town.

This was a hard sell for many residents of Harrison Township, who were skeptical that the project was meant more for summer commuters to the shore. But when finished, the bypass will end the almost daily traffic jams on route 45 where 322 joins in for a short stretch.

Deputy mayor Dennis Clowney says he’s pleased things are getting started.

“It’s good to see,” he said. “Finally, the final piece of the puzzle coming through and be able to see the traffic down through the Richwood section to get on Route 55 and to head to other parts of the county.”

More than 27,000 cars a day currently use 322 and most are expected to take the bypass once it is completed in little more than a year.
