The Annual Susan G. Komen Sisters For The Cure Event Held In Center City

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - At a special seminar this weekend, the spotlight was on breast cancer in the African American community.

The Susan G. Koman Foundation hosted their 9th annual Sisters for the Cure event at the downtown Philadelphia Marriott.

Philadelphia Executive Director Elaine Grobman says not all breast cancer tumors are the same, "There are aggressive breast cancer tumors that are different in African American women than in Caucasian women. The aggressiveness of some of the tumors needs to be treated differently."

Grobman says women should get mammograms annually beginning at age 40, earlier if you have a family history of the disease or if your body just doesn't feel right. "Over 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,000 may die if they don't get the early detection. If you find breast cancer early, you have a 98 percent, five year cure."
