Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Ski Season Begins Anew

Freezing temperatures this week in the nearby Pocono Mountains signaled good news for skiers and snowboarders, and snow sport getaways are now underway.

That hissing sound you hear is an arsenal of snow guns. They've been blasting away at Pennsylvania ski and snowboard resorts for nearly two weeks and have delivered impressive depths of skiable snow for an early start to a new season.

Pennsylvania can't depend on natural snow to cover hundreds of slopes and trails, but where Mother Nature leaves off, technology takes over. Modern snowmaking systems used throughout the Poconos can automatically start up when temperatures hit about 28 degrees.

Many trails are now open and more are opening every day. The first Poconos resorts to see skis and boards on snow this season were Big Boulder and Camelback. This weekend, most areas will be live and lively.

An easy way to check which trails and slopes are skiable is to go to www.skipa.com, the web site of the Pennsylvania Ski Areas Association, and find links to 23 resorts throughout the state.

Think Snow!
