Philadelphia Water Department Needs 'Spokesdogs'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia's looking for a couple good dogs to help raise awareness of a messy problem. There are only a few more days to sign up your pooch.

The city water department is looking to name two spokesdogs from East Falls, Manayunk, and Roxborough to be poster-pups for an educational campaign, "to encourage owners to pick up after their dogs."

It's a fallacy to think their fecal matter is a harmless fertilizer -- far from it, says water department spokeswoman Laura Copeland, "It's full of bacteria and parasites and it's just not good for our water supply."

Instead, she says, flush it or put it in your trash can.

The chosen dogs will appear at events around town to proclaim the clean-up mantra, and the owners get a $200 pet store gift card.

The deadline to enter is Sunday.
