Need A Job? Check Out The Feds

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — We all know people looking for work and among the most disappointed about being unemployed are college grads. Tell them that the federal government may be the best place to get a job these days.

The assumption is that those positions are in Washington; however, 86% of the federal workforce is not in D.C. and Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland are in the region with most federal opportunities.

On the Partnership for Public Service website is information for people of all ages and levels to find interesting positions. There are at present 2.1 million government employees and yet 28 departments have job openings. Staff is being sought for about 273,000 jobs starting on October 1, 2009 through September 20, 2012.

According to a recent article in the Philadelphia Business Journal, Swarthmore College is among a small group of schools each awarded $5,000 to make students aware of career opportunities with the federal government. Find out about that effort and check on the Web.

I ‘m a recent graduate of Colorado Technical University, and will graduate again with my Master’s in Healthcare Management. I have graduated twice since 2008 and applied to over 5000 jobs. I’m an older graduate believing in the American dream, “if you fight hard enough and don’t give up you can make it”. I’ve worked low paying jobs all my life, because of the lack of education. Now that I have my education (and the first in my family to reach this level of education) there are no jobs. Employers are asking for younger or more experienced individuals.

One other reason preventing me from gaining employment is a second language along with jobs being outsourced . I think it is disgraceful that you can not get a job in a English speaking country because you cannot speak Spanish; making it harder to find employment;. Why does America keep shooting it self in the foot ?

With the way things are going with ‘outsourcing’ these days, I think we’re going to have to go to India and China to get a job. That’s where all of our jobs are going. So, pack your bags. Get ready to take a trip. That’s what we might have to do to get our jobs back.
