Dog Owners Go To Great Lengths To Win ‘Best In Show’
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Approximately 2,000 beauty contestants will be competing for top dog this weekend at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks.
Some of the canine contestants competing in the show hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia have a glam squad to make them look and feel great. The owner or owners of a dog hire a professional handler, and the handler has two or three assistants answering to every beck and call.
Ron Scott, board member of the Kennel Club of Philadelphia says, “The percentage of dogs shown, it will be a relatively small number that will go to this extent. It’s called ‘specialing’ a dog — trying to compete at the top level to try to win as many best in shows and groups among the course of the whole year.”
Scott says some of the animals have a professional photographer hired to follow them around using the photos for publicity purposes on the dog’s website.
Tickets are available for both shows. Saturday is the national dog show which will be broadcasted on NBC Thanksgiving Day. Sunday is the Kennel Club of Philadelphia show and family-friendly attractions.
