Health Concerns At Center City Police District

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A CBS3 I-Team investigation has revealed growing health concerns among officers at one of Center City's busiest police districts.

Since renovations began more than a month ago at the 6th District headquarters at 11th and Winter Streets, officers who work there say thick brown dust has been filling the air, coating desks and uniforms. Some officers have even resorted to wearing surgical masks.

City officials, citing conditions, have closed the district to the public and even prisoners, but officers have been told to continue working inside.

After complaints by Fraternal Order of Police officials, the department's safety office inspected the district, concluding there was no asbestos in the dust, but also stating there were no signs warning officers about work areas.

When the CBS3 I-Team began making inquiries, the department did assign some officers to another facility. But as of now, all patrol officers on all shifts are still working in the building.

Police officials directed all inquiries to the city's Public Property Department. A spokesperson there told CBS 3 they are looking into the situation and will take "whatever actions are necessary."
