After Two Years, South Street Bridge Re-Opens To Traffic

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The South Street Bridge is back in business, connecting center city with University City.

The new South Street Bridge reopened to vehicular traffic late Saturday afternoon. Before that, it was packed with walkers and cyclists. There were even a couple of
al fresco games of bridge played on the bridge.

It's wider, better illuminated, with roomy sidewalks and buffered bike lanes.

Cyclists say it's another sign of the city's enlightened attitude toward bicycle travel.

Mayor Nutter says the user-friendly bridge came out of a collaboration between the Streets Department and the community:

"This collaboration has produced a better bridge; a bridge that balances the needs of all users."

The project came in on budget, and, even more remarkable, opened a month earlier than expected.
