Vote To Have A Say In Your Own Backyard

Philadelphia (CBS) - Along with autumn leaves and late-blooming perennials, this time of year lots of yards are also planted with posters for political candidates and causes. It's worth noting – and worth voting – particularly if you care about the great outdoors.

So much of what happens to the landscape of our towns, counties and states gets decided in the voting booth. That includes the way land gets developed – or if it's preserved as open space instead. Decisions are made about dredging rivers, protection for woodlands, and how to control the growing deer problem. From funding for parks and recreation, to laws about water run-off, to how high your garden fence can be and whether your neighbor can build an addition that will block all the sunlight from your vegetable patch – it all gets decided by people you can vote for.

That's why even if you only care about what goes on in your own backyard, you really should vote. And if you missed this chance because you're not registered, do that now so when the signs sprout up again in the spring, you'll be ready.
