Surprise! SEPTA Puts A Few Of Its Shiny New Trains To Work

SEPTA put three of its new, state-of-the-art "Silverliner V" regional rail cars into service this morning on the Cynwyd line.  We went along for the ride and spoke with some of the first passengers.

The Silverliner V cars were decked out with red, white, and blue flags, and passengers said they liked the bright, spacious interiors, large windows, video screens, and digital panels showing information about each stop.

And they even liked what they smelled.  Michelle Greenspan of Bala Cynwyd is a frequent rider:

"Yeah, a new train smell!  I never knew there was a new train smell but I can vouch for that now."

Septa general manager Joseph Casey:

"This is a state-of-the-art train and it was built under new FRA guidelines for safety.  These are replacing 47-year-old cars."

The three cars that debuted on Friday are the first of 120 Silverliner V rail cars that Septa purchased under a $274-million contract.  The cars will be placed into service at various points during the course of the next year.
