Philly Sheriff's Retirement Delayed For Bookkeping Audit

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia sheriff John Greene is not riding off into the sunset, at least not yet. Greene delayed his retirement while the city controller ramps up his investigation of the financial bookkeeping mess in the Sheriff's office.

Sheriff Greene was to retire at the end of this month, but instead will stay on the job until city controller Alan Butkovitz completes a forensic audit -- a top to bottom look at his office's bookkeeping:

"The sooner this whole issue is put to bed, the sooner I can go on with my life. But I can't very well leave the sheriff's office, nor the citizens of Philadelphia, with the cloud of some impropriety occurring within the sheriff's office."

Greene vowed to cooperate with Butkovitz. The controller on Tuesday said Greene had blatantly refused to cooperate and provide financial materials' on how it operates.  The forensic audit is expected to take several months.
