France is once again in a spotlight it would rather have avoided.  It shines on transportation strikes, unrest in the streets, and highway disruptions.

All this has to do with a government plan to raise the retirement age in France to 62. For the getaway traveler it can spell delays, cancellations, and missed connections, not to mention a messy stroll in Lyon or Marseille (right).

But France isn't alone.  In Italy, garbage is piling up in the streets of Naples.  And the deepest budget cuts in British memory are likely to cause, among other things, increased rail fares for travelers throughout the United Kingdom.

So, here are just a few tips for your European trip:

-- Before you go, check on current political conditions.

-- Stay away from street demonstrations. They're not fun to watch and can get very nasty.

-- Leave prestige-logo clothing at home.

-- And above all, don't play "Jack Flash" with a roll of currency.
