Glass Pumpkins Help Raise Money For Artists

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you want a Halloween pumpkin, but don't want one that will rot, the glass department at Tyler School of Art can help.

There you can buy glass pumpkins to help raise money for visiting artists.

"When we bring a visiting artist to Tyler, they show us how they make their work; they have a lecture," said grad student Emma Salamon (at right).

Salamon explains how to make a glass pumpkin.

"You gather hot glass out of a furnace full of hot lava material and we blow into a mold that has ridges and then you blow it out into this pumpkin form."

Students hope to raise at least $15,000 with this fundraiser. The pumpkins are selling for between $15 and $35.

You can check out the pumpkins at the school on Wednesday October 27  from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"They're so cute! Some of them have spots, they're colorful, they're shiny and hey, there's nothing better I think than a glass pumpkin for Halloween," explains Salamon.
