Center City District Honors Vigilant Cops and Civilians

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Center City District has honored local law enforcement, security professionals, and civilians who stepped up to the plate when they saw bad things going down in the past year.

Philadelphia police officer Joseph Davis was off duty, walking along Rittenhouse Square one night, when suddenly, he heard screaming:

"I looked down the street. There were three men running toward me with women's handbags."

Those three women were robbed at gunpoint, and the Center City District's Stacy Irving says Davis had to improvise until backup arrived, when he saw one of the suspects jump into a getaway car:

"Joe surprised him by reaching in and snatching the car keys."

Davis says, "I wrestled him and held him down."

Irving says that responding police nabbed the other two:

"Three women, first time tourists visiting from England and Switzerland, were elated to retrieve their posessions, which included passports and other valuables."

Officer Davis says the night worked out well:

"I was on a first date, so it was pretty good and it worked out."
