Candlelight Vigil Honors Bullying Victims

GLENSIDE (CBS) - Arcadia University's gay and lesbian community held a candlelight vigil Monday night to remember those young people who committed suicide after anti-gay bullying and violence.

It was called "Pennsylvania Night to Live", and was designed to remember those who took their lives after being harassed because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Dr. Ana Maria Garcia, is the faculty advisor to Pride, the university's gay and lesbian group:

"We have a responsibility as a college community to show gay and lesbian, transgender questioning youth that we have their backs. We are a community that is available to them, both students that are here and folks outside of our gates, so we have been moved to become much more pro-active."

She says this fall the near epidemic of suicides by gays and lesbians has galvanized people to speak out and protect this community.
