PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia’s Commission on Human Relations held the ninth in a series of 11 hearings on school violence Wednesday afternoon.
Commissioners heard more public testimony about inter-group conflict and violence in schools. They heard from a 9th grader who said she’s sexually harassed at her school. The goal of the nearly year-long process? Listen, recommend action, and present that plan of action to the school district.
Kay Kyungsun Yu chairs the commission and says teaching respect is not easy:
“What has resonated throughout the hearings to me is that we need to engage everyone at every level in schools — teachers, principals, students but also community members.”
She also says it’s an everyday challenge to create a safe and nurturing environment but one that enriches all once that’s done.
