Fake Hand Grenade Forces Evacuation Of South Philly Charter School

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A South Philadelphia charter school was evacuated on Wednesday morning after a student brought a dummy hand grenade to school.

The incident took place at the Performing Arts Charter School, in the 2600 block of South Broad Street.

The bomb squad was called and the school was cleared out.  The student told investigators he had purchased the dummy grenade at a flea market.

Once the bomb squad gave the all-clear, students were allowed back in and classes resumed.  The bomb squad said it would dispose of the fake device, which is similar to those used for military training and are sometimes brought back from the service by ex-servicepeople who save them as souvenirs.

Full blown degenerate that hides behind a computer screen….get a life loser! I only came on here because involved my child…obviously you have nothing else better to do with your time. As Joe Pesce said in My Cousin Vinny…”I’m done with this idiot!”

  • Brittany

Everyone did a wonderful job with handling the situation. It could have killed many students, faculty, teaches, and staff. It is better to be safe than sorry. I am very thankful to be alive and for everyone else that was in the building you don’t know how important. By the way Alec and Norm wouldn’t you rather have the school safe and unharmed than be in there which may actually be a real grenade .So like the saying I have heard millions of times “if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.” What would you do if you had a child in the school; I am sure you would want them as safe as possible. You don’t know how fragile life is until you are almost gone.

  • Barbara Vazquez

I also have a child at this school, and I also applaud every one involved. From the South Philly police, bomb squad, rescue, Dr. Avicolli, and the PPACS staff. I could not have asked for it to have been handled any better. I feel good knowing my child is safe at PPACS.

  • Jennifer

Norm and Alec….LET ME DUMB THIS DOWN FOR YOU A BIT…..PPACS did what they HAD to do and what they are REQUIRED to do and handled it with utmost professional. No one gives a rats ass what you think when it comes to the safety of our children!

    • Alec Berg

Thank you Jennifer, I is so dumbs thats I needsed to heard from yous. You”re readly smarts and book lerned.

      • jackie

You’re not dumb, Alec, you’re just an AssHat!

  • Mike the Matador

Hey Norm, they are doing wonderful things with medicine these days—-“you need me on that wall, you want me on that wall”……all you did today Norm is weaken a country!!

    • Alec Berg

Another great post by Mike the genius. Thanks Mike, keep up the intelligent posts, I’m learned so much from you about life.

  • Jacqui

    REALLY?????? THANKS!!!!!

  • Norm

Jacqui, they’re having a sale on bubble-wrap at Staples. Stock up! Junior will surely need to wrap himself in it when he gets out of bed in the morning.

  • Jacqui

I also have a child in that school and was thankful that they evacuated, even if it turned out to be a fake threat. And let me tell you Norm, I’ll be as over-protective of my child as i want to be!!! Who are you to make such a comment!! Are you even a parent?? Boy, i hope not!!!

  • Mike the Matador

I applaud everyone’s comments here except the idiot Alec Berg.
I also have a child in that school and was very pleased on how everything was handled. Alec you sound like the type of person that would have these types of ammo laying around your house with children nearby…. get a clue!

    • Alec Berg

Thanks Mike, I’m so glad to have your intellect and moral compass to guide me, you are a stand up guy and very well respected here on CBS3 local. Maybe you should go national and share your wisdom.

  • Norm

Nothing ensures the next generation of ‘Casper Milquetoasts’ better than poorly-informed, over-protective parents … thus the pussification of America continues.

  • LIsa

Thank you to The City of Philadelphia Police Officers, Fire Rescue, Bomb Squad and All the PPACS staff. When it comes to my Children, being cautious is the right way to go!!!!!! All of you did a great job in handling the situation!!!!!! Thank you again.

  • john

Alec, common sense tells you to evacuate. Do you really want to take a chance when hundreds of kids lives are at stake? BTW- road flares are used to rob banks all of the time. Why ? Because it looks real !!! Maybe a few questions by bank tellers would stop robberies all 2gether.

    • jackie

Alec…ever heard of an ounce of prevention?

  • Cyndi

I agree. My child attends that school and had they not evacuated I would have huge issues. I think the school did a wonderful job of handling the situation appropriately!!! Thank God it was fake!

  • christie

when my kids are involved i want them to be cautious. i am very happy they did what they did because there are too many crazies out there and it could have been real, don’t forget the subway is right there, a common target for nuts. there are procedures for instances like this and i am glad they are followed.

  • christie

the school was being cautious because no one knew it was fake since the student left it unattended.

    • Alec Berg

I think common sense and few questions to the students would’ve resolved the issue. What a ridiculous situation. What’s next “Road flares thought to be TNT?”
      No common sense.

  • Alec Berg

I don’t get it. Why did they have to evacuate if it was fake? That makes no sense at all.

    • Nicole Mangiaracina

Theey thought it was real im a student there and we all thought it was real till the checked it .
