(CBS) — The Bucks County SPCA has outgrown its home in Lahaska, Pa. and has broken ground on a second location that will be built in Quakertown, to make it more convenient for residents of Upper Bucks County to take advantage of their services and programs.

SPCA officials say Bucks is a growing county, and the need for their services continues to grow every year.
The new 11,000-square-foot facility in Richland Township (above) will have room to shelter about forty dogs and fifty cats, and a barn that can house farm animals.

Executive director Anne Irwin says an increase in the number of animal hoarding cases has also taxed their ability to house animals:

“We’ve been thinking, ‘Oh, wouldn’t it be nice to have the second place open so we could spread these 56 cats over two locations or the 34 standard poodles, if we could divide them up and have a little more flexibility?’ ”

They hope to have the $3½-million building open by the end of next year.

The SPCA also kicked off its centennial campaign, designed to raise money for the new building and its programs and to celebrate its 100th birthday in 2012.
