Diesel Fuel Released Into Atmosphere At Philadelphia Sunoco Refinery

PHILADELPHIA (KWY 1060) - Some diesel fuel was accidentally released into the atmosphere overnight at the Sunoco refinery at 28th and Passyunk in Philadelphia.

KYW's Suzanne Monaghan reports that a unit malfunctioned at the refinery and was immediately shut down, but not before the fine mist of fuel was released into the air.

Some residents who live within one and a half miles north of the refinery woke to find a clear oily film on their cars. But Communications Manager for Sunoco, Thomas Golembeski says that's pretty much the extent of the damage.

"There's no potential health impact to the area residents. It's unfortunate that something like this happened but they don't have to worry about their health."

The company has people out in the affected neighborhoods helping residents. The cause of the malfunction is under investigation.
