PPA Says Kiosks Host More Cars Than Meters

PHILADELPHIA (KYW NEWSRADIO 1060) -- Most on-street, pay-parking in Center City and some other high-traffic areas is now by kiosk, rather than meter. But that means the old guidelines for parking spaces may not apply.

KYW's John Ostapkovich reports that as the Parking Authority rolled out kiosks, they figured that since many vehicles today are smaller, they might get a couple more per block, says Corrine O'Connor, director of on-street parking.

Lower issuance of violations seems to show this is true, but there are also times when some park in such a way that there are fewer spaces:

"I myself was a parking enforcement officer at one point and even when you had the double-headed meters on the street, sometimes you would see a vehicle actually park in the middle and take up both meters. You're going to have one that doesn't know how to park, and that's not really something I can fix."

O'Connor says maybe a motorcycle can be wedged into a tiny space, but a SmartCar has to park like the big dogs.
