It's Sunscreen Season

by KYW's medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

This is sunblock season.

No, this is not a report I wrote last July and we are re-running today. I am well aware it is late September. That's the point!

Summertime is not the only time you need to wear sunblock. All year long it's wise to cover up with a lotion that has a high SPF. Sun damage can occur at any time.

Now, this doesn't mean you should go out and purchase suntan lotion all year. Certainly, this is an option, but many cosmetics companies have gotten pretty smart. There are many creams and lotions with SPF built in. This may be the best direction to go.

Remember, you really only need to cover the areas that are exposed to the sun most often. For instance, if you have a long commute in your car, you need to be aware that there is sun exposure every minute you are sitting on the drive -- it comes right through the window.
