Pa. Gubernatorial Candidates Trade Barbs Over 'Florida Loophole'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3 / KYW 1060)  The men who would be Pennsylvania's next governor are knocking heads today over gun control, and the so-called "Florida loophole."

KYW's Mike Dunn reports that Florida is one of three states that issues gun permits to out-of-state residents, a practice that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Dan Onorato (left) says contributed to a shooting death in Philadelphia earlier this month.

Speaking at City Hall, Onorato said GOP rival Tom Corbett (right), as the current Attorney General, could close the loophole by simply ending the state's reciprocity with Florida:

"This is a current issue that can be dealt with today without legislation. And his decision not to do it, I think speaks volumes."

But Corbett's spokesman Kevin Harley says ending reciprocity wouldn't close the loophole — only state legislation would — and he criticized Onorato for focusing on the incident:

"He uses the death of a young man in Philadelphia as a political prop. It's shameless and he should be ashamed of himself."
