Pa. Trooper Says Phila. Cop was DUI in February Crash

A Pennsylvania state trooper testifies an off-duty Philadelphia police officer was drunk and speeding when he slammed into a state police car seriously injuring a trooper in a crash north on I-96 near Girard in February.

KYW's Tony Hanson reports the police officer was fired after the crash.

Trooper Mathew Sheeran, 28, a three-year veteran, and his partner had stopped behind an abandoned/disabled vehicle partially blocking the right hand lane when witnesses say off-duty officer Mathew Sharkey blew by two sets of warning flares and another state police car with emergency lights on at a speed of up to 85 miles an hour. He smashed into Trooper Sheeran's car, pinning him between his patrol car and the abadnoned vehicle.

Trooper Sheeran is still recovering from multiple broken bones and damaged ligaments and tendons:

"Multiple surgeries, completely regrafted ligaments, and a lot of bruising and a lot of recovery. No where close to going back to work."

He hopes to return to work but concedes there are no guarantees at this point. Officer Sharkey, whose blood alcohol tested well over the legal limit, was fired.
