A 21-year-old Bucks County, Pa. man has pleaded guilty in Philadelphia to driving under the influence and aggravated assault by vehicle for a crash that nearly killed two Philadelphia police officers on Aramingo Avenue in Port Richmond in June of last year.
KYW’s Tony Hanson reports that prosecutor Noel Ann DeSantis has told the court witnesses estimate defendant John Cusick was driving at up to 80 miles per hour when he ran a red light and crashed into another car, a Geo Prizm, that had been stopped by police officers Richard Hayes and George Higgonson:
“It sent police officer Higgonson into the back of trunk, causing the injuries to his face. It sends police officer Hayes airborne and he lands actually inside the Geo Prizm, falling into and basically he lodged into the dash.”
A fellow officer says the bloodied victims were unrecognizable. She identified them by their nameplates. Both officers have returned to duty.
Officer Hayes’ uncle, Philadelphia police officer Robert Hayes, was shot and killed in the line of duty in 1993.
