Diagnosing Dizzyness

by KYW’s medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

Dizziness is one of the most common reasons why people visit their doctor.

The symptoms of dizziness are just what you think: lightheadedness, feeling wobbly, off balance and faint. There is one form of dizziness called vertigo where you feel things are moving or spinning around you. There are many causes of dizziness and you will need your doctor to help you in figuring it out.

Dizziness can be caused by problems with the inner ear, nervous system, and heart. It can even be the result of anxiety. There are medications designed to treat dizziness. As I mentioned it is important to work with your physician but the good news is that the vast majority of causes can be dealt with through relatively minor steps. It is just the detective work process that can be tough.
