Philadelphia police officials today announced the issuance of an arrest warrant for a man wanted for last Sunday evening’s violent rape of a woman at 8th and Race Streets.

KYW’s Steve Tawa reports the 22-year-old victim was waiting for a bus when she was grabbed, choked, and forced into the nearby Chinatown subway station (see previous story).
When the brutal crime was interrupted by a passerby, the attacker left behind his pants, wallet, and a Mexican driver’s license.

Capt. John Darby, commander of the Special Victims Unit (right), says that investigators have since determined that the driver’s license was fake, but he would not disclose how they were able to determine the real name of their suspect.

Now, the Philadelphia district attorney’s office has issued an arrest warrant for 33-year-old Alberto Isaac Navarrete Suarez (photo above). Police say there is no record of this man, of Mexican descent, entering the United States legally, nor of him having any prior contact with law enforcement.
Darby says Suarez has been a transient, in this area only about three months and living in South Philadelphia most of that time.
A search warrant was executed at Suarez’s last known address, but Darby says they are not sure of his current whereabouts.
Meanwhile, the FBI has also put Suarez on an alert list with Homeland Security and Immigration, noting that he may be trying to flee to avoid prosecution.
