On Septa Trains and in Stations, It's Still an "R" World

SEPTA pulled the letter “R” from its Regional Rail route designations a month ago, but station and train signs still have not been changed.

KYW’s Lynne Adkins reports that you won’t find an R2, R5, or R7 on your train schedule anymore, and conductors all use the new names using the route destination without the “R” (see related story).

But you will still find Rs on the signs on the side of the trains and at the stations.

Septa spokeswoman Jerri Williams says it will take a while to replace all the signs and it was never the intention to do everything at the same time:

“We just don’t have the manpower to do it that way.  We’re not going to hire a set of employees just to replace signs — we’re using our current manpower, and those crews have additional jobs to do.”

She says the new bluish-grey route signs should be on the side of every train by the end of September, but replacing all the signs at the train stations will take several months.

Williams adds that some of the old station signs will be put up for sale next year, so if you have a special memory about the R7, for example, you could keep it forever.
