Dogs and cats can also suffer from allergies just as we do. These allergic reactions can result in severely itchy skin. There can be several types of allergies that can be affecting your pet: food, contact, (such as a flea bite) or inhaled. Food allergies seem to be the most common. They can happen year round and at any time, and can also present other symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea along with skin irritations.
Inhaled allergies or atopic can be seasonal and just like us, dogs and cats can also be allergic to pollen, mold, spores and other allergens in the environment, as well as elements found within the household like animal dander and dust. Although people respond to such allergens with sneezing and itchy, watery eyes, the reaction for your dog and cat is in the form of extremely irritated, itchy skin. This leads to constant scratching and chewing which can cause severe irritations, extreme discomfort and serious secondary infections.
If you notice your dog or cat is itching and scratching more than usual, there could be one or more allergies present. Contact your veterinarian for help and relief as soon as possible.
