Police Lieutenant Assaulted at Rite Aid in S. Phila.

A 29-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department is in stable condition after being assaulted during the apprehension of a drug store theft suspect.

KYW's Hadas Kuznits reports Police are looking for the man involved in an altercation with a police lieutenant at the Rite Aid at 15th and Moyamensing.  Deputy Comissioner Kevin Bethel says Lieutenant Douglas Stanford apprehended the man for retail theft outside the drug store:

"A tussle ensued.  They carried it into the store, at which time the male was able to flip the lieutenant over, cause him to strike his back area."

Lieutenant Stanford was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where it was discovered he suffered 3 broken ribs and a bruised lung:

"The male we're looking for is a black male, 6'1" to 6'2", he's about 250 pounds wearing a black and white checkered long-sleeved shirt, black capri pants, a beanie cap with a scruffy beard and a mustache."

The man being apprehended for theft got away on a bicycle.  Lieutenant Stanford is expected to make a full recovery.
