1,500 Bicyclists Participate in Grand Fondo in Phila.

Unlike most Sunday races and walks, the Grand Fondo is technically not a race and it's not a fundraiser.

KYW's Al Novack reports this fun bicycle ride is patterned after similar rides in Italy.

The Grand Fondo got underway at 6:30am. Associated with it is a bike expo near the Please Touch Museum. About 1,500 participants, all amateurs are taking part in 3-size rides; 105 miles, 62 miles, and 31 miles, according to city spokesperson Margurite Hughes.

A number of Italian dignitaries will be on hand for a brief awards ceremony at the end.

A grand fondo or big bike ride is a long distance mass participation event in which riders share their enthusiasm and fun for biking and its many challenges.
