Drexel Women's Varsity Crew Wins Prestigious Race
Drexel University has joined an exclusive club– one whose only other members are Brown, Yale, and Radcliffe.
KYW’s Pat Loeb reports there are few sports titles in the world as prestigious as Henley Regatta champion, and Drexel’s women’s varsity eight crew is now in the elite group of US schools that can claim that distinction.
Perhaps no one was more surprised by Drexel’s upstart victory than the crew itself, according to head coach Paul Savell:
“When we’re going against Great Britain’s Olympic hopefuls, no. I mean, we go in always hoping to win but this exceeded all expectations.”
The boat’s June victory was celebrated at a Wednesday evening reception, which also was a debut of sorts for the university’s new president, John Fry:
“I’ve been here for three days, so this is certainly a nice way to start.”
