A city councilman is calling for an immediate halt to Philadelphia’s rotational towing system, in the wake of an apparent violent battle between two of the towing companies.
KYW’s Mike Dunn reports that city councilman Jim Kenney wants the system shut down entirely while Licenses and Inspections checks the validity of the companies on the list:
“I would like to suspend the entire rotation system for the next month or so.”
Kenney says some of the firms signed up for rotational towing but only listing their business privilege license:
“So because a lot of these guys got on the rotation list just with their BPL, it doesn’t mean they have a tow license and doesn’t mean any of their trucks are licensed. So I need a more comprehensive enforcement arm to really go after this.”
This comes after one tow operator was shot in the leg earlier this morning by another at the scene of an accident. The Police Department later revised procedures by calling the tower at the top of the list sooner and by keeping those calls off radio bands that the tow companies monitor.
Deputy mayor for public safety Everett Gillison says the police department will not halt the rotational towing system despite Kenney’s plea. He believes the changes to the system made this month will help eliminate issues with the process.
