A new report in the Journal of the American Medical Association has interesting findings about bariatric surgery.

KYW medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough reports over the past decade, bariatric surgery has become the second most common abdominal operation in the United States.

A University of Michigan study which looked at over 15,000 patients found that those hospitals which performed the highest number of bariatric or weight loss procedures had the lowest incidents of complications.

Those with the fewest procedures had the highest rate of problems.

Two of the most common procedures in bariatric surgery are the gastric bypass and gastric band procedures.
