J&J to Lay Off 300 at Fort Washington Plant
Johnson & Johnson is laying off hundreds of employees at its plant in Fort Washington. The repeated recalls of several popular drugs are to blame.
KYW’s Margie Smith reports the factory operated by J&J’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit has been shut down since April because of multiple recalls of Tylenol and other non-prescription drugs, including a number of children’s medications.
Four hundred employees have been getting paid since then but now about 300 of them are getting pink slips.
The company says it’s planning a big upgrade of the plant to improve quality control. That’s expected to keep the factory closed until sometime next year. J&J released a statement saying current employees will be among the first considered when the plant reopens, but staffing levels at the spruced up facility are expected to be substantially lower than they are today.
