Consumer Report: Buying an Air Conditioner

by CBS3's Jim Donovan for KYW Newsradio 1060

Window air conditioners have been hot sellers all this week and chances are that will continue. But you need to have some basic measurements handy to be sure you're getting the right one for you.

Emmett Taylor is with Home Depot.

"One of the first things we try to do is qualify them by asking what size windows they have."

If it doesn't fit in your window, you're back to square one.  But room size is equally important too:

Taylor:  "They've give us a room dimension and we'll look at the chart."

So you can match up a model that will cool your room efficiently.

In general, a 5000-6000 BTU air conditioner can cool between 100 and 300 square feet.

Prices start at $100 and depending on size go up from there.
