Some people don’t have a choice.  They have to be outside working in all kinds of weather, including this week’s uncomfortable heat.

Joe of Garnett Valley, Delaware County is on the job for Healey, Long and Jevin at the construction site of the new Sysco Food Distribution Center in South Philadelphia.

Joe, who came out of a utility trench to take a break, says it’s rough on days like today, and you have to be prepared:

“Start off in the morning early when it’s cool. Just drink a lot of fluids and try to get the work done early in the morning.

(Abrams): “What time did you come out here this morning?”

“We started at six.”

(Abrams): “What time are you generally out of here?”

“2:30.”

(Abrams): “How do you cope during the day, I mean look at that sun already out there?”

“You have to do what you have to do.”

(Abrams): “Is it something you’re used to?”

“You never get used to it. You just battle it. You just do what you can.”

Joe says everybody’s happy when it’s quitting time, but they all know they’ll be back the next day for another hot time on the job site.
