Work continues for the President’s House memorial on Independence Mall.
Original plans had the President’s House memorial opening over this year’s July 4th weekend, but delays pushed it back to November.
Passersby can now see above-ground construction on the project, according to Roz McPherson, the project’s manager:
“The front façade, the demarcations for some of the room areas. Pretty soon they will actually be able to see the glass vitrine that will house the archeological remains.”

She says it’s been an exciting, emotionally evocative project:
“Trying make sure that there are things that are historically accurate but by the same token discovering that there are some historical facts that we’ll never actually know the answers to. So there is a lot of continuing sleuth work, a lot of unanswered questions — but there’s also a lot of new light being shed.”
Behind the scenes, there’s still work going on with the graphics, the video, and the artwork that will tell the story of George Washington and the nine enslaved Africans who lived in this house.
