2 Teenage Suspects in Shooting of Chester Officer

by KYW's Steve Tawa

Delaware County authorities believe two Chester city teenagers were involved in what investigators call a 'brazen daylight home invasion robbery' on Tuesday in which a responding officer was wounded.  (see previous story)

Authorities believe two gunmen, dressed entirely in black with their faces covered, interrupted a card game inside a garage, knowing they were playing for cash.

Delaware County district attorney Mike Green (photo) says several people started running when they saw one of them waiving a shotgun:

"Alert members of the community did not hesitate to call 911 when they spotted trouble."

Chester officer Luis Rodriguez, who was one of the first responders, exchanged gunfire and was hit in the upper arm, but he has been released from hospital care.

Green says one exiting gunman, 16-year-old André Morales was shot multiple times by police and died at the scene. A second 16-year-old, Shaquille Byrd, was also shot and captured.

Green says Byrd faces a long list of charges:

"Under the homicide statutes, specifically second degree homicide, the defendant can be held responsible for the death of any persons dying during the commission of those felonies."

One of the people allegedly being robbed was also shot by the gunmen. The teen and the victim are expected to survive.
