Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) – Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley suffered a right thumb injury during the team’s 7-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.
Utley led off the fourth inning with a single to center, but tried to stretch it into a double. He apparently sustained the injury while sliding into second base on the play.
In 72 games this season, the four-time All-Star selection is hitting .277 with 37 RBI and 11 homers. Utley is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday.

I tore my left thumb and dislocated it playing softball some time ago. I had surgery and wore a cast for quite a while. I ended up finishing the season playing as a lefty and swinging the bat with just one arm. But it was a couple of years before I was comfortable using my thumb again without wincing. The thumb is major. We’ll see Utley again next year.
