Patco officials have teamed up with a Camden, NJ company to develop a prototype wireless communications system that would allow the train operator to communicate with passengers during an emergency or technical mishap.

If you’ve ever sat in the dark in a stalled train, you know that getting information from the train crew would be a big benefit.  Soon, the waiting and wondering could be over.

The prototype system being demonstrated today by Patco features screens in the trains that would display text messages from the operator to passengers to allay their fears or give instructions, even if the crew has to exit the train to investigate a problem.

The wireless system, which will include a keyboard in the engineer’s cab and a wireless device that clips on the engineer’s belt, also allows the crew to communicate with central dispatch about medical or other emergencies.

The system is several years away from being operational but officials say you will eventually see these screens on Patco trains.
