24 Years for Moyer as Phils Down Yanks
Exactly 24 years to the day since his major-league debut, Moyer (7-6) bounced back from his previous start, which saw him give up nine runs and nine hits in just one-plus inning of work to the Red Sox last Friday. In this game, he was charged with just two runs on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth each hit solo home runs while Shane Victorino added a three-run triple for the Phillies, who had dropped four of five coming into the contest.
Robinson Cano and Jorge Posada each hit solo home runs for the Yankees, who had a nine-game home winning streak snapped. A.J. Burnett (6-5) was tagged for six runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts in just 3 1/3 innings of work in last year’s World Series rematch.
The Phils plated four men in the second to take the lead. With one out, Raul Ibanez walked and stole second. Greg Dobbs then singled to bring Ibanez home. Brian Schneider worked a walk and Wilson Valdez hit an infield single off of Burnett before Victorino punched a triple to center for a 4-0 lead.
Cano got one back in the second with his 14th home run of the season, a shot to right, but the Phils answered in the third on back-to-back solo homers from Howard and Werth for a 6-1 lead.
Posada clubbed a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left in the fifth inning to make it a 6-2 game.
Moyer set the Yanks down in order in the sixth and got Cano to ground into a double play to end the seventh inning.
In the eighth, Moyer gave up a two-out infield single to Kevin Russo, but then got Brett Gardner to fly out to shallow right to end the inning.
In the ninth, Brad Lidge gave up a two-out walk to Mark Teixeira followed by an RBI double from Alex Rodriguez to make it a three-run game. Cano then singled to right to bring the tying run to the plate, but Lidge struck out Posada to close the victory.
